Welcome to Priorat—one of Spain’s most unique and exciting wine regions. Known for its dramatic landscapes and rich
winemaking history, Priorat introduced a new classification system for wine called ‘Els nom de la terra’ (The names of the land) in 2019. This system of classification is ‘about calling wine by its name, by the place from which it comes.’
It is similar to a Burgundy-style pyramid model with the broadest, most general group at the base and increasing in quality through the five tiers until you reach the top of the pyramid with Gran vinya classificada (classified great vineyard or grand cru). The classifications have been based on terroir (the quality of the site) and the age of the vines as opposed to administrative boundaries by which a large number of Spanish wine regions are defined.
This guide will introduce you to its wine classifications, from the broad DOQ Priorat level to the prestigious Gran Vinya Classificada.
Traceability
The Consell Regulador DOQ Priorat set the boundaries of Vi de Vila, Vi de Paratge, Vinya Classificada and Gran Vinya Classificada with the intention of guaranteeing the origin of the grapes and that the wines have been made according to the qualifications they have set out for each level of classification.
