Description
Grecante has a long history dating back to the Renaissance. Many wines from Umbria were referred to at the time as "Greci, Grecanti, Grechetti." Of these, Grecante of Montefalco was among the most celebrated. In fact, the head of municipality of Montefalco would often choose a bottle of Grecante when wanting to gift a special bottle of wine to someone.
Arnalo Caprai, originally a textile entrepreneur, founded his winery in 1971 by purchasing 12.5 acres of land in Montefalco. In 1988, his son Marco took over the estate to revolutionize the grape that has been growing in the region for more than 400 years: Sagrantino. Today, they are considered to be a benchmark producer of Sagrantino di Montefalco. Arnalo Caprai is further celebrated as a producer committed to sustainable farming practices and recognized as being champions for their winemaking in Umbria.
Arnaldo Caprai produces their 100% Grechetto in the Colli Martani DOC of Umbria. The vineyards are trained on Spurred Cordon and Guyot trellises and planted on clay and limestone soils. The wine is aged 3 months in stainless steel to preserve freshness and fruit quality and further aged a minimum of 3 months in bottle before it is released to market.
