Description
‘499’ was founded in 2012 by two talented winemaking professionals; Mario Andrion (winemaker at Castello di Verduno) and Gabriele Saffirio (formerly of Brovia). Located on the picturesque cliffs of Camo, at the top of the Langhe, the estate is planted to 14 acres solely dedicated to Moscato and Freisa.
The winery takes its name from the elevation of the vineyards situated at 499m above sea level. The cool climate here allows for the slower ripening of grapes; yielding wines with naturally elevated acidity. ‘499’ employs minimal intervention practices in both the vineyard and the winery reflected in their wines that are refined, full of character and vibrancy.
The single-vineyard Coste dei Frei is situated on sandy, calcareous soils where the vines are trained on guyot trellising systems. At the winery, fermentation occurs is temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with manual punch-downs every 15 days. The wine is aged for 12 months in old barriques before it is bottled and released.

Taste
A vibrant, red fruit-driven Freisa typical of the Langhe region. Tart and ripe cranberry, red cherry, and currant fill the glass with hints of crushed bay leaf and thyme. There is a distinct forest floor note to the wine with underlying violet pedal, bitter baking chocolate, and cedar. The wine is dry, medium-bodied, with fine grippy tannins and refreshing acidity.
