Description
As a young boy João Teodósio Matos Barbosa would accompany his grandfather, founder of Caves Dom Teodósio, when he oversaw the work in the vineyards. From this experience he developed a passion for wine and a desire to become part of the family project – beginning in 1976. Breaking away from the family business, João established the company João TM Barbosa Vinhos in 1997. Today João Barbosa & Filos has two estates: Porta de Teira in Rio Maior within the Tejo Do and Valle de Junco in Esperança, Portalegre located in the Alentejo DO.
Lapa dos Gaivões Escohla is produced on the Valle de Junco estate. The 2022 vintage is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Aragonez and Touriga Franca. The fruit is carefully transported to the winery in 12 kg boxes. Grape bunches are hand sorted, and gravity fed into stainless steel tanks where maceration takes place for 4 days at controlled temperatures followed by an additional 10 day fermentation. The wine is then aged in French barriques for 12 months and bottled unfiltered.

Taste
This wine shows dark berry and spice characteristics delicately framed in vanilla and spicy oak nuances. Expansive on the palate with intense dark fruit and an impressively elegant structure. Tannins are fine and the finish is tireless.
|
Cellaring Potential
The rich, ripe nature of the fruit make this wine approachable today but the structure and acidity suggest this wine will age for another 10-15 years.

Food Matching
Best enjoyed with slow-cooked braised meats and vegetables.
