Description
Domaine Vacheron, established in 1968 by Jean-Louis Vacheron with 5 hectares of vines, produces white, pink and red Sancerre. Today the estate, almost 50 hectares, is run by two cousins, Jean-Dominique and Jean-Laurent – Jean-Louis’ grandsons.
The cousins inherited some of the most coveted parcels in the appellation. They vinify the parcels by terroir and blends vary from year to year. The majority of the vineyards are located in the eastern part of Sancerre on hard, flinty (Silex) soils with some small holdings on softer limestone and clay soils. Flint produces long-ageing Sancerre which you will find with the estate’s Cru bottlings. However, the ‘village’ Sancerre combines fruit from both terroirs producing a subtle, mineral driven wine with expressive fruit that is approachable in its youth. The estate, certified biodynamic in 2005, is harvested by hand, no synthetic material is used in the vineyards and the yields are low. Traditional winemaking techniques are employed, with white wines fermented in small stainless steel tanks or old open-top wood vessels, always by native yeast.

Taste
This Sancerre is renowned for its intense aroma of green fruit and freshly-cut grass. The first taste is dominated by the intensity of the gooseberry fruit until the dense mineral core and subtle vanilla creep in, giving the wine impressive presence. Candied citrus and berry aromas and flavours are accented by toasted grain and pencil shavings. Simply delicious, it lingers nicely on the finish.
